Financial Literacy Improvement Program

FLIPAll candidates for the baccalaureate degree must satisfactorily complete 30 or more hours of curricular, extracurricular, or co-curricular service-learning.

UW-Eau Claire finance majors can satisfy 15 hours of their service learning requirement through participation in the Financial Literacy Improvement Program (FLIP) administered by the Department of Accounting and Finance. FLIP provides assistance to economically disadvantaged individuals and families in the Eau Claire area.

FLIP volunteers help clients find solutions for everyday financial challenges. Volunteers undergo training sessions prior to working with clients. The training sessions, which are led by faculty and community financial experts, prepare FLIP volunteers to address issues specific to each client, for example developing a household budget, using bank accounts to your advantage and managing debt.

UW-Eau Claire students working in the FLIP program must register for FIN 310, Financial Literacy Program. In this one-credit course, students learn basic financial literacy concepts, such as how to develop a household budget, use bank accounts to their advantage, and manage debt. Refer to the UW-Eau Claire catalog for course prerequisites. NOTE: instructor consent required for registration. Students formally apply to participate in FLIP the semester before they begin working with clients.

For more information, contact Dr. Kristopher Kemper, FLIP coordinator, UW-Eau Claire Department of Accounting and Finance.
