International Fellows Call for Proposals

Deadline: February 6, 2012

Deadlines for Future Reviews
June 15, 2012

The Center for International Education (CIE), the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) and the Center for Service-Learning (CS-L) received multi-year funding via the Blugold Commitment to support the Student-Faculty International Fellows Program for Research, Service, and Creative Activity during next three fiscal years (b)We are currently inviting applications for projects to be carried out during the summer and winterim sessions within the following timeframe: July 1, 2012 to June 15, 2014. Due to the three-year funding commitment, multi-year proposals will be considered.

Applications are due to the Center of International Education by February 6, 2012. A proposal may be submitted by any member of the collaborating team.

This new program capitalizes on the strength and success of high impact academic experiences offered at UW-Eau Claire and is dedicated to supporting international student-faculty collaborative research/creative activity and research service-learning (i.e. field research conducted in conjunction with a service-learning experience). This program aims to achieve the following objectives: 1) To actualize the Centennial Plan’s commitment to accelerate global learning, 2) To support the Centennial Plan’s commitment to transformational learning, and 3) To fulfill an unmet student and faculty need for financial support to conduct international research and creative activities. In addition, one hope is that some funded projects might grow into longer-term, self-sustaining international relationships or programs.

Faculty Eligibility

UW-Eau Claire faculty and academic staff with .5 FTE or greater appointments are eligible to apply. First-time applications are encouraged.

Student Eligibility

In order to apply, students must be degree-seeking undergraduate students at UW-Eau Claire at the time of application and throughout the research project. At least one student on the research team must have a minimum of one additional semester at UW-Eau Claire after the project is completed.

Eligible Expenses

International Travel:

  • The program will provide funding for the cost of round-trip travel to and from the host country for mentor(s) and student(s).

  • In general, the program will provide up to $1,000 in funding to cover the cost of in-country transportation and lodging for each faculty/staff mentor and each student. Larger requests may be considered if there is a compelling research justification.

  • Meals are not an eligible expense.

  • Faculty/staff members are not eligible for travel and in-country funding if these expenses will be covered through another funding source.

Project Supplies: Limited funding is available for supplies that are integral to the project.

Faculty Stipend: Faculty/staff mentors may request up to a $1500 stipend for mentoring the student(s) as part of the eligible expenses.

Student Stipend: Students may request up to a $1,000 stipend for their participation in the International Fellows Program.

Program Requirements

  • Funds can only be used to support undergraduate projects. Graduate students are not eligible for funding.
  • Applicants must demonstrate some financial support from their college, department, unit or division as part of their application.
  • Mentor(s) and student(s) must spend a minimum of three consecutive weeks in the host country together and all projects must occur during the winterim or summer so as not to interfere with semester academic and administrative commitments.
  • The host country cannot be under a U.S. State Department Travel Warning. For current list of countries with a Travel Warning, please visit the http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html.
  • Project objectives should be clear, reasonable in scope and timing, and clearly placed within the theory and methodology of the academic discipline.
  • Proposals that include research service-learning should demonstrate the support of a community partner and the appropriateness and feasibility of the service project. (A letter of support from the collaborating partner would be helpful.)
  • Mentor(s) and/or student(s) must demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the host country culture and language to complete the proposed project.
  • Funding recipients are expected to present their research or creative activity outcomes at UW-Eau Claire Student Research Day and/or UW System Symposium. Students are also encouraged to present their results at other discipline-specific research venues.
  • Any benefits to the campus community should be clearly stated (e.g. internationalization of course content; establishing international connections for future research; promoting ongoing, sustainable, economic, social, and educational development; making contacts for faculty or student Fulbrights, etc.)
  • Travel funding requests under $10,000 are strongly encouraged.
  • The research team will be required to submit a financial report at the end of the project.
