An Interview with Megan H.
When Megan H. chose to study in Riga, all of her courses were either economics or business courses that applied to her Management major.
Megan also enjoyed learning outside of the classroom. “Latvia is not a country that many people are familiar with, and I found it very interesting to go to a country with little to no expectations of the culture or food or people,” she said.
Speaking of food, Megan has a couple of dishes to recommend. “Pelmeni, Siberian dumplings, were my favorite. I also love pankukas, which were like crepes that were stuffed and folded. Cheese -filled ones were excellent, but I also loved the fruit-stuffed ones, especially raspberries.”
Daily life? “The bus stop at the corner took me right downton for class, to go shopping, eat or spend time with friends. I had class 4 days a week, so I had a long weekend for traveling.” Megan took advantage of her weekends to visit Tallinn, Estonia, Vilnius, Lithuania, and St. Petersburg, Russia.
Studying abroad impacted Megan in many ways. “I am more outgoing, more passionate about international experiences, more involved on campus and with friends.” She also found a new career direction. “I always knew I was interested in business, but a leisure and tourism management class I took in Riga made me realize I wanted to work in the tourism industry. I got a job at a hotel as soon as I got back and love it. Now I’ve joined AIESEC, a student organization that offers international internship opportunities, and I am looking into tourism internships around the world.” (editor’s note: Megan did an AIESEC internship in India, Fall 2008.)
