An Interview with Melissa S.
Melissa S., a Spanish for Business major, found studying at ITESM to be a great way to learn Spanish and the Mexican culture. “Studying in Mexico helped me reach my life-long goal of speaking another language.” Academically, the program worked very well for her. “Three of the four classes I took transferred directly back into my Spanish for Business major, and the fourth fulfilled an upper level GE requirement I also needed.”
Melissa liked the flexibility in designing her program. “I was able to pick what city I wanted to study in, what classes I wanted to take, where I wanted to live, etc.” Her best experience was “meeting and living with my housemate. She was from Japan and we became really good friends. It was great having someone to explore the city with.”
How has this experience impacted Melissa? “Studying abroad has broadened my perspective on life. I not only learned about the Mexican culture, but I also learned about the Japanese culture, and in doing so, I learned a great deal about my own culture. It also helped me become independent and know that I can survive and be happy by just relying on myself."
