The CIE has a strong host Family/Friends program. At the request of students, they are matched
with an American host. This is a friendly, informal relationship, that allows the student to experience
more genuine American culture, and gives the host friend/family a chance to learn about another culture.
Many times real friendships result from this arrangement.
Our Host Family/Friends Program features a three-day homestay upon arrival, and a
"home-away-from-home" for holidays and celebrations. Hosts are asked to make at least a
monthly contact with their students and provide a sense of non-academic life in the United States.
If you have questions please contact Kathryn Hurd , Host Family/Friends Coordinator at hostfriend@uwec.edu, Host Family/Friends Coordinator.
If you have been accepted and will be coming to UW-Eau Claire and you would like a Host, please fill out and send our Student Profile.
Student Comments
"Having a host family is an education in itself. It was for me, indeed, a window
to the
American culture, a manner of appreciation of what I was offered. I will always remember the
way my host parents took care of me from the very day I set foot in this town until the day of my
graduation. They helped me grow through my adventures in a foreign country, without ever
feeling foreign. Through laughter and tears, they were my best friends!"

"My host family really helped me adjust to life in Eau Claire. Many times during the year,
they were a home-away-from-home for me."

"Host friends are great! They treat me like I am their daughter, and I think of them as my
American family in Eau Claire. It is so nice to have someone you can trust while you are
away from home."
 -Ai Matsutaka, International Student
