International education is an integral and vital component of university life, and its importance continues to expand. UW- Eau Claire encourages the professional development of faculty and staff through international opportunities which enriches on-campus curricula, and the development of study abroad programs that meet the academic needs of students.

The CIE offers a variety of appointments abroad to UW-Eau Claire faculty and academic staff. Spending a semester, summer, or winter abroad can be a very rewarding and enriching experience. It may enable you to undertake a research project in your area of specialization, to gain access to a special collection in a library abroad, get in touch with colleagues at international universities, or provide new insights to enhance your teaching at home.

Given budget and instructional constraints, before you apply for a semester long program you must consult with your Department Chair or Program Director. Your Chair/Director will consult with your Dean.

 

UWEC Opportunities

Harlaxton College

Program Description

UW-Eau Claire faculty in full-time positions may apply to teach for a summer term or a semester at Harlaxton College, the British Campus of University of Evansville.

You must teach courses from the University of Evansville catalogue, adopt elements that are unique to Harlaxton, and make use of the Manor, opportunities within the region and the United Kingdom as a whole. In general, Harlaxton is seeking a blend of lower-level general education courses and mid-level and upper-level courses that "majors" would be likely to take.

They offer a few special topics courses each term, especially if the courses  incorporates the British context of the Harlaxton experience. Students in your classes will come from University of Evansville as well as a variety of partner colleges including UWEC

Faculty salary and airfare are paid by UW-Eau Claire. Faculty traveling with a spouse/partner and/or any dependents are responsible for the costs associated with accompanying family (e.g. airfare, immigration fees, international health insurance, etc.). See below for additional information on housing and meals.

Location

Harlaxton College is three miles from the Midland's market town of Grantham and is near the cities of Lincoln, Nottingham, Leicester and Peterborough. London is a little over one hour by train from Grantham Station.

Eligibility: UW-Eau Claire and Barron County faculty in good standing are eligible to apply. Applicants must have at least a Master’s degree but a doctorate is preferred. Applicants must teach at UW-Eau Claire or Barron County the semester prior to their teach abroad and plan to return to UWEC upon completion of their teach abroad.

Enrollment Minimum

Harlaxton College expects visiting faculty to recruit 10 students from their home institution. Exceptions to this target can be made at the discretion of Harlaxton College Principal.

Course Load:

  • Semester: 3 three-credit courses.
  • Summer: 1 three- credit course

Housing & Meals

  • Semester: Housing and meals are provided by Harlaxton College at no cost to the faculty, spouse/partner and/or dependent children.
  • Summer: Housing and meals are provided by Harlaxton College at no cost to the faculty member. If a minimum of 10 students enroll in the course, housing and meals will also be provided to an accompanying spouse/partner. Housing and meals for any additional family members are payable by the faculty member.

Faculty housing is located in the Carriage House or the Manor. Each faculty and accompanying family will have a private room, however, not all faculty rooms have ensuite shower and toilet. Meals are served in the Harlaxton College refectory at scheduled times

Travel Cost: Airline ticket for the faculty member is paid by Center for International Education at UWEC.

Heath insurance: Faculty are responsible for maintaining UW System health insurance coverage; Center for International Education will pay the cost of CISI insurance for faculty member.

Other Expenses

Faculty pay a Harlaxton health & wellness fee, as well as a modest fee to use the campus shuttle. There are additional fees for spouse/partner and/or dependent children.

Compensation

  • Semester: Faculty receive their standard UWEC compensation (salary and benefits) for semester.
  • Summer: Faculty are paid their normal UWEC summer rate based on the number of credits they are teaching at Harlaxton; typically three-credits.

Harlaxton Application

Kansai Gaidai University

Program Description:

Kansai Gaidai University seeks faculty to teach courses in the Asian Studies Program through their visiting professor program. While it is preferred that the faculty members' main teaching or research interest is Japan or Asia, other areas may be accommodated since the teaching opportunities are available in the Asian Studies Program as well as in a special program for Japanese undergraduate students. Given the timing of the process, this opportunity is best suited for faculty on sabbatical.

Since the 1970s, UW-Eau Claire students have been studying at Kansai Gaidai University for a semester or academic year as part of the Asian Studies Program.

Faculty traveling with a spouse/partner and/or any dependents are responsible for the costs associated with accompanying family (e.g. airfare, immigration fees, international health insurance, etc.)

Location

Kansai Gaidai University is located in Hirakata City (population 400,000), midway between Osaka, Japan's second largest industrial city, and Kyoto, the ancient capital. The university was founded in 1945 as a private language institute. Today, Kansai Gaidai enrolls more than 11,000 students, including more than 700 students from 50 countries in the Asian Studies Program.

Course load: Past faculty have been asked to teach 1 three-credit course. Depending on the number of courses that a faculty member is asked to teach abroad, the faculty may still have teaching obligations at UWEC during the semester abroad.

Travel and visa costs: Airline ticket and visa costs for the faculty member are paid by Center for International Education at UWEC.

Heath insurance: Faculty are responsible for maintaining UW System health insurance coverage; Center for International Education will pay the cost of CISI insurance.

Compensation: Semester faculty receive their standard compensation (salary and benefits) for the semester. If on sabbatical, faculty receive sabbatical compensation. 

If you are approved by UW-Eau Claire to advance in the process, you will also need to complete a Kansai Gaidai application. Please note: the Kansai Gaidai application is submitted the semester prior to the teach abroad semester.

Changshu Institute of Technology

Program Description

UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff, and retired faculty may apply to teach one three-credit course to the finance, computer science, or material science and engineering international cohorts at Changshu Institute of Technology  (CIT) in China. First-time faculty/staff applicants will be given preference in the application process. Students in the international cohort take the majority of their first-year classes in English with the expectation that they will study in the United States as part of the CHEPD (China 1+2+1) dual degree program. Many of these students will come to UW-Eau Claire to begin their degree program in finance, computer science, or material science in the following spring semester.

The UWEC courses taught at CIT are intended to fulfill the following goals:

  • Advance student progress in the UWEC liberal education core or major.
  • Facilitate students' transition to U.S. pedagogies and academic expectations.

For the Computer Science cohort, we are seeking a course that fulfills one or more of the following requirements:

  • R1-Equity/Diversity/Inclusivity
  • R2-Global Learning
  • R3-Civic/Social/Environmental
  • I1-Integration

For the Finance cohort, we are seeking a course that fulfills one or more of the following requirements:

Location

Changshu Institute of Technology is located in Changshu, a city of one million people and a 3,000 year-old history. Changshu is located about 62 miles (100 kilometers) from Shanghai and 124 (200 kilometers) from Nanjing.

Airfare, Housing & Meals

  • Airfare: Changshu Institute of Technology will pay $1500 toward at round-trip, economy ticket for the course instructor
  • Housing: Housing is provided by Changshu Institute of Technology at no charge to the faculty member.
  • Meals: Faculty receive a weekly stipend of 700 Yuan from Changshu Institute of Technology to defer the cost of meals and incidentals.
  • Visa: Visa costs for faculty member covered by CIE.

Heath insurance: Faculty are responsible for maintaining UW System health insurance coverage; Center for International Education will pay the cost of CISI insurance.

Compensation: Faculty salary is paid at the normal UWEC summer rate for a three credit course.

Accompanying Family Members

Faculty are responsible for airfare, visa, meal costs for accompanying family members.

CIT has indicated they could accommodate family members, provided they are willing to live in the same apartment as the faculty member. Interested faculty members should contact the CIE to discuss housing for accompanying family.

 

Changshu Institute of Technology Application

Changzhou Institute of Technology

UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff, and retired faculty may apply to teach one three-credit course to the international business cohort at Changzhou Institute of Technology (CZU) in China. All students will be non-native speakers of English who have just finished their first year of college. Instructors are encouraged to propose 100 or 200 level courses that can be easily adapted to students of mixed language ability.

Changzhou Institute of Technology is located in Changzhou, a city of 3.75 million people in Jiangsu province. Changzhou is located about 97 miles (156 kilometers) from Shanghai and 72 (116 kilometers) from Nanjing.

  • Airfare: Changzhou Institute of Technology will pay $1500 toward at round-trip, economy ticket for the course instructor
  • Housing: Housing is provided by Changzhou Institute of Technology at no charge to the faculty member.
  • Meals: Faculty receive a weekly stipend of 700 Yuan to cover living cost from Changzhou Institute of Technology to defer the cost of meals and incidentals.
  • Visa costs for faculty member covered by CIE.

Changzhou Institute of Technology Application

USAC Faculty/Staff International Development Award (FIDA)

Program Description: The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is an affiliate member of University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC), which provides tuition scholarships for  a limited number of faculty and staff to participate as a student during a summer study abroad program. The goal of the program is to provide study abroad experiences to faculty and staff with limited prior international experience and increase the knowledge of USAC programs  This experience may professionally benefit faculty and staff seeking to improve their language and culture skills in order expand their research, internationalize a course, or to further inclusive practices and services offered to students and families. FIDA recipients are expected to share their experiences with students upon their return, as such preference is given to faculty and staff with regular direct student contact.

Each year USAC will determine the locations where they can support FIDA recipients. UWEC will support FIDA applications in the following locations where we have approved USAC programs:

  • China, Chengdu
  • Costa Rica, Heredia or San Ramon
  • Cuba, La Habana
  • Czech Republic, Prague
  • France, Lyon or Pau
  • India, Bangalore
  • Italy, Reggio Emilia
  • South Korea, Seoul or Gwangju

Eligibility: UW-Eau Claire Administrative professional and academic faculty at both UW-Eau Claire main campus and Barron County campus may apply (must be full-time assistant, associative or full professors). Applicants should have limited prior international experience, plan to return to UWEC the following academic year, and must have regular and direct contact with students.

Terms: Summer Program length varies from 3-6 weeks during late May through mid-August

Expectations: Recipients of the awards participate as a student and therefore are subject to the same policies as students, including attendance. Recipients must arrive in time for orientation, stay for final exams, and participate fully in all program activities.

USAC Grant: USAC provides a tuition waiver and field trips included in the program.

Housing, meals, travel, and visas:  Airfare, housing, optional tours/travel, and additional course costs are not included in the waiver. Faculty and staff should discuss funding with their department and explore funding opportunities through the Professional Development Programs in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs: https://www.uwec.edu/orsp/faculty-academic-staff/funding-opportunities/.

Heath insurance: Faculty and staff are responsible for maintaining UW System health insurance coverage; CISI coverage is available through USAC.

Accompanying Family Members: You may bring partner/spouse and/or dependents with you but you will need participate in all classes and program activities, which may mean arranging child care. Accompanying family members may be able to participate in some USAC activities and/or USAC courses for a reduced fee.

Additionally, faculty and staff are responsible for airfare, visa, meal costs for accompanying family members.

USAC Visiting Professor Program

Program Description: As an affiliate member of University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC), UWEC faculty and Instructional Academic Staff (IAS) can apply to USAC’s Visiting Professor (VP) program. In this program, affiliate faculty/IAS apply to teach pre-determined courses, which are delivered in English and that complement the courses offered by host-country faculty. UWEC faculty/IAS are eligible to apply for USAC programs that have been approved by Academic Policies Committee (APC).

Term: TBD. Terms and courses for the 2024 - 2025 year have yet to be announced

  • San Ramón, Costa Rica – Summer Session 2 (July)– Ecology and Population Biology (BIO/ENVS, 300-level, 3 credits, taught in English)

Eligibility: UW-Eau Claire and Barron County faculty/IAS in good standing are eligible to apply. Applicants must have at least a master’s degree, but a doctorate is preferred. Applicants must teach at UW-Eau Claire or Barron County the semester prior to their teaching abroad and plan to return to UWEC upon completion of their teaching abroad. Candidates must have previous experience teaching the selected course or a very similar one. Other things that will be considered include teaching ability and experience, flexibility with new living and working conditions, ability to recruit students, and ability to engage respectfully with local culture and staff.

Enrollment Minimum: There is a minimum requirement of at least five (5) students enrolled before the course (and thus the VP participation) will be confirmed. Faculty/IAS selected as VP are required to actively assist in student recruitment on U.S. campuses and beyond. 

Dates: Faculty/IAS will teach during one session in June or July, typically for four weeks. Summer Session 1 typically starts at the end of May and runs through June, and Summer Session 2 runs mostly during the month of July. Interested faculty/IAS can visit USAC site and look at the program calendars to see approximate dates for future terms. Choose a program and then select the “Calendars” option from the menu. 

Course Load: 1 three-credit course

Travel Cost and Arrangements: Airline tickets for the faculty/IAS member are paid by the Center for International Education at UWEC. VPs will make all their own travel and personal arrangements via UW System approved travel providers.

Heath Insurance: Faculty/IAS are responsible for maintaining UW System health insurance coverage; USAC will pay the cost of CISI insurance for the faculty/IAS member.

Compensation

  • $5,000 paid by USAC
  • CISI Insurance paid by USAC
  • Airline ticket paid by Center for International Education

Housing & Meals: The $5,000 stipend is compensation for teaching and goes toward expenses (i.e. housing, meals, etc.). USAC will assist with finding housing.

Application: Interested faculty/IAS will apply directly to USAC. The USAC application includes the following components: online application form, a 2-4 page CV, and a department summary of recent teaching evaluations. USAC will share the name of finalists with the Center for International Education; all UWEC faculty/IAS and staff must be approved by UWEC Academic Affairs.

International Research

The International Fellows Program for Research, Service, and Creative Activity is made possible by a multi-year Blugold Commitment Grant. It is an innovative program coordinated by the Intercultural Immersion Coordinator, in collaboration with the Center for International Education (CIE) and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP). The International Fellows Program capitalizes on the strength and success of high impact academic experiences and is dedicated to supporting international student-faculty collaborative research/creative activity and research service-learning (i.e. field research conducted in conjunction with a service-learning experience).

Faculty Led Study Abroad

UW-Eau Claire faculty members continue to develop and lead study abroad programs in many different countries. Intercultural Immersions aims to keep expanding the variety and number of faculty-led programs available at UW-Eau Claire. Current faculty-led programs are listed below (some do not run annually).

Made possible by a Blugold Commitment Grant, the Faculty-Led International Immersion Experiences (FLIIE) Program encourages and supports faculty-led study abroad experiences for undergraduate UW-Eau Claire students by providing funding to decrease student costs and thus increase programmatic offerings and opportunities for student participation.
