Admission Process for International Exchange Students

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) is proud to have exchange partnerships across the world! Exchange programs allow international and domestic students to "change places" for a semester or year. Exchange students will take courses in their field of study while abroad and transfer those credits back to their home university.

Information for Partner Institutions

Attention, exchange coordinators! Everything you need to know about international exchange at UW-Eau Claire is available in the Information for International Exchange Coordinators (Fall 2024-Spring 2025) PDF.

International Exchange Student Application

If you are a student at one of UW-Eau Claire's partner institutions and have been approved by your home university to study at UW-Eau Claire, your next steps are to complete and submit the International Exchange Student Application materials (Steps 1-5).

All the application materials (Steps 1-5) must be submitted to UWEC by the appropriate application deadline. You may submit all items via email to the UWEC International Program Assistant, Samantha Maurer (maurersl@uwec.edu), except for your university academic records.

Your home university must send your university academic records via email to International Ed Transcripts, at intled-transcripts@uwec.edu.

Step 1. Special Student Online Application

You must officially apply to UW-Eau Claire by using the Universities of Wisconsin online application. Since you are applying as an international exchange student, you will not pay the online application fee.

Follow the step-by-step instructions to apply as an international exchange student: UW-Eau Claire Online Exchange Application

To access the online application, go to apply.wisconsin.edu.

Step 2. Evidence of English Proficiency

All students must submit the following documentation if they plan on taking non-ESL academic coursework.

Attestation of English Language - Required for ALL students

You must submit an Attestation of English Language Form, no matter if English is your first language or your home university is taught in English, because this form is required for the student visa.

The Attestation of English Proficiency (PDF form) must be filled out by a representative of your home university or English Language school. Once your representative has completed the form, you may submit it via email.

Proof of English Proficiency - An additional requirement for some students

If English is not your first language, you must submit further proof of English Proficiency via email.

You can prove English proficiency in one of five ways:

  • TOEFL iBT total score of 75 or 541 institutional
  • IELTS overall score of 6.0
  • Duolingo English Test overall score of 115
  • Demonstrate successful completion of a CEFR (Common European Framework) C1 English course on an official transcript
  • Instruction of home university is in English

If you do not submit English Proficiency now, you will be required to demonstrate English proficiency upon arrival. If you have a score less than the TOEFL iBT total score of 75 (or equivalency), you will be required to take an English as a Second Language placement test during orientation. Based on the test results, you may be recommended ESL courses.

At a minimum, students are required to have a TOEFL iBT total score of 48 or IELTS overall score of 4.0 to be at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Step 3. Financial Verification Form & Certified Financial Documents

You must provide proof of finances, as this information is required for the student visa. There are two parts you need to submit via email to prove your finances, the Financial Verification Form and Certified Financial Documents.

Financial Verification Form

If you are a nominated student from the Hessen-Wisconsin exchange agreement, read and complete the Hessen-Wisconsin Exchange Financial Verification Form (2024-2025).

If you are nominated by any other university (not the Hessen-Wisconsin exchange agreement), read and complete the Undergraduate Exchange Financial Verification Form (2024-2025).

Certified Financial Documents

You are required to provide certified financial supporting documents that add up to the total cost indicated on your Financial Verification Form. All financial documents need to be certified and less than 6 months old. Documents that are not certified or are more than 6 months old will not be accepted.

If you will use scholarships or loans to pay for your education, you must submit financial documents that prove those funds will be available to you while you are at UW-Eau Claire. If you are struggling to get these documents, email the International Program Assistant.

  • For example, if you use government loans to pay for educational costs and are studying at UW-Eau Claire during Fall 2024, you must submit financial documents showing that you have loans that apply to the Fall 2024 semester.

Specific instructions are written in the Financial Verification Form on what exact financial documents you will need to gather.

Step 4. University Academic Records

It is your responsibility to make sure your home institution sends UW-Eau Claire your official transcript. If your transcript is not in English, your university must submit both the original language and English translation of the transcript.

If you have studied in the U.S. before, including language coursework, you must submit an official transcript of all courses taken in the U.S.

The transcript from your home university must contain the following:

  • List of all courses
  • Grades
  • An official stamp
  • Signature from a university official

For timely processing, your home institution should email your official transcript to intled-transcripts@uwec.edu.

Step 5. Passport Copy

Email a copy of the photo page of your passport.

Acceptance and Next Steps

Your home university will be contacted via email regarding your application results.

Once you are accepted, complete the items on the Accepted International Student Checklist before you travel to UW-Eau Claire.

Academic Advising

Academic advising is offered for students through Advising, Retention and Career Center. Questions regarding course information or registration should be directed to Linda Carlson at carlsol@uwec.edu

International Degree-Seeking and Dual Degree Students

Degree-seeking students are students who intend on getting a degree from UW-Eau Claire. International degree-seeking students should apply using International Student Application. The application process for international exchanges students is not the same as the application process for degree-seeking students.
