CETL Scholars Program

The purpose of this program is to create a community of teaching scholars who will support each other as they each develop, implement and assess a learning experience for students.  The goal of the program is for each participant to design and carry out a significant, scholarly teaching/learning project that has the potential to be published.

The CETL Scholars Program will run during the 2009/10 academic year under the guidance of Dr. Bob Eierman.  During fall 2009, group members will each identify and study a teaching/learning issue and design a teaching method or experience that addresses it.  The methods will be discussed with the group to enable support and idea sharing.  We hope to see a range of teaching/learning topics addressed by the participants including fundamental cognitive issues like reading and writing, equity/diversity/inclusiveness (EDI) issues, the efficacy of instructional technology, etc.

Participants will also develop one or more methods for assessing the new teaching experience.  Assessment strategies and tools will be discussed by the group and participants will work to create practical, effective means to collect evidence that supports conclusions regarding the quality of the learning experience and the quantity of student learning that occurs.

During spring 2010, the learning experience will occur and the assessment tools will be used to gather evidence.  Participants will meet as a group several times during the semester to discuss their progress and share ideas.  Finally, the assessment results will be analyzed to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the teaching/learning experience.

Participant Expectations and Incentives:
Each participant must submit a proposal describing their interest in joining the program and the teaching/learning issue they plan to study.  Up to 10 selected participants will receive a $500 stipend upon completion of their project, along with funds to purchase materials for their project.

Participants will be expected to attend CETL Scholars meetings and to design and complete a scholarly teaching/learning project.  The stipend will be paid when a final report describing the project and its results is submitted to CETL.
