Communities of Practice
Reading to Learn:
Using educational concepts of collaborative learning and independent reading, Reading to Learn supports reading as a strategic and cognitive process. Students learn how to integrate prior knowledge, critically analyze texts and develop context as they read course material and prepare for both small and large group discussion in the classroom.
Project Goals
1. Review the literature on promoting student reading and discussion to contribute to group discussion and understanding of key issues.
2. Adapt reading to learn techniques to meet your instructional needs and develop a reading community for your class(es).
3. Assess the effectiveness of reading communities.
4. Encourage and support the implementation of these practices and tools through a University-wide presentation, summative report, and/or journal article.
The ultimate goal for this project is to develop best practices models and contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning.
This group has been meeting for two semesters and will continue to meet during Spring 2010 to finish their projects. If interested in learning more about this group, please contact Jan Larson at larsoja@uwec.edu.
