Terms of Engagement: Understanding and Promoting Student Engagement on Today's College Campus

Concern over student engagement has become central to conversations regarding quality in higher education, but what does 'student engagement' mean? And once we know, how do we achieve it? Dr. Elizabeth Barkley, author of Student Engagement Techniques, spoke to UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff on Thursday, August 30. This interactive session started with identifying the challenges participants face engaging students in their own teaching. Then, using a dynamic model for understanding what 'student engagement' means, participants drew from Student Engagement Techniques (Barkley, 2010) as well as participant experience to strategize techniques for promoting it in their varied teaching and learning contexts.
