Participate in interactive discussions with the presenters on topics such as teaching comprehension within a text-based discussion format, using digital tools to engage learners, games to enhance literacy, and more. Get the latest information on the new state Common Core State Standards from a panel of experts.

9 - 10:30 a.m. Keynote Address. Dr. P. David Pearson, Faculty in the Language & Literacy and Cognition & Development programs, Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkley. His research areas include reading, writing, and language employed as tools to foster the development of knowledge and inquiry in science and embedding research within the portfolio of school-based issues and priorities.

8:45 - 10:15 a.m. Writing with New Technologies, Dr. Richard Beach, PhD, Professor of Curriculum and Education, University of Minnesota.  Dr. Beach’s research focusses on students’ development of digital literacy and their responses to multicultural literature.  He has co-written a number of books such as Engaging Students in Digital Writing;  High School Students' Competing Social Worlds: Negotiating Identities and Allegiances through Responding to Multicultural Literature; and Teaching Literature to Adolescents.

Bringing the Future Forward: The Critical Role of Literature and Arts in Reading Education, Dr. Patricia Encisco, Associate Professor, School of Teaching and Learning, The Ohio State University. Grounded in ethnographic research perspective, Dr. Encisco's research examines how young people become full participants in the production of meaning and knowledge about themselves, others, and the worlds they traverse.

Cancellation Policy

You may cancel your program registration up to five business days before the start date for a refund less a $25 administrative fee. If you cancel fewer than five business days before the start date, no refund will be given. If you do not attend the program, you are responsible for the full fee. If the program is canceled or full, we will refund the program fee. You may substitute another person for your registration at any time. Call us for assistance.
