Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need to be identified as "gifted and talented" to participate?
No, it is open to any motivated 1st to 5th grade student who tests into one of the levels we offer.

How are students placed in the program levels?
Placement testing and teacher observation before the first class will determine your child's starting level.

Will my child's age or grade level be considered when placement levels are assigned?
No, your child's knowledge of math concepts and comfort level completing the placement test will be the only factors considered in placement.

What if my child finds their starting level too easy?
If teachers find that your child already understands the concepts in their starting level, they will move him or her into the next level.

What curriculum do you use in the program?
The base curriculum is Math-U-See.  Activities and examples are also drawn from Ed Zacarro's Challenge Math.  Activities, software, web sites, games, songs, manipulatives and other resources will be incorporated.

What if my child completes the last level before the program is over?
He or she will be moved into a more advanced level of instruction.  Beyond the first seven levels, the Math-U-See curriculum advances to Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Calculus.
