Dig Deeper into the Science Behind Gardening
Don’t miss this opportunity to expand your knowledge about the plants you love to cultivate in your garden and backyard! Learn about basic plant classification, general plant anatomy, environmental needs of plants (light-photosynthesis, watering, temperature, minerals, etc), propagation, plant growth, and pests and diseases.
You’ll also get your hands dirty during each class as you apply what you’ve learned through hands-on work in the UW-Eau Claire Greenhouse on campus. By learning some of the basics of applied botany and plant biology you will be able to be more creative and knowledgeable in your approach to gardening and horticulture as a whole.
Instructor
Lynn Young-Janik is the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Green House Manager, and has a Master’s of Science in Botany. The university greenhouse comprises 3,500 square feet and includes five growing zones including Tropical Succulent Houses. Having gardened most of her life and with the last 15 years in Western Wisconsin, she has faced many of the common challenges known to Wisconsin gardeners. Her current garden includes mostly native species grown to attract bees, butterflies and birds. Her vegetable garden is essentially organic.
