Over the years, bird-watching has evolved dramatically from a purely ornithological endeavor to a satisfying recreational pursuit that can be enjoyed by anyone who wants to learn more about the natural world around us.  In this seminar/field excursion, you’ll discover the amazing ornithological diversity that the Chippewa Valley has to offer.  In preparation for your first of three field trips, you’ll meet on campus to learn how best to use binoculars and bird guides for in-the-field bird identification.  By focusing on song awareness, plumage, behavior, habitat, season, and geography in this first session, you’ll be ready to put your new skills to use in the outdoors.  Each of the three field outings will focus on a separate bird population specific to the Chippewa Valley area: winter and permanent resident birds, migrant waterfowl, and summer resident song-birds.  Learn or re-discover your birding skills with an enthusiastic and highly skilled local ornithologist!
(Walking for first three field excursions will be light on level ground—the final excursion will require moderate walking on some uneven ground).

Presenter

Dr. Terry Balding is a retired biology professor from UW-Eau Claire where he taught ornithology. His knowledge of local birds is extensive, and he is capable of identifying any bird in the area by sight or sound.  He has published widely in his areas of expertise: the red-shouldered hawk population of the Lower Chippewa/Eau Claire Rivers and the effects of increased volume of tape-recorded playbacks on bird responses. Terry has a great enthusiasm for observing and learning all about nature and then sharing these experiences with others.
