About the College

Welcome Message from the Dean

A liberal-arts/liberal-sciences education challenges students to develop intellectual skills such as analysis, synthesis, critical thinking, and application; to strengthen communication skills and abilities; to enhance their aesthetic appreciation and humanistic understanding; and to develop a broad and deep perspective that contributes to their effectiveness as educated citizens who engage in life-long learning. These attributes are all taught and learned in the academic programs of the College of Arts and Sciences at UW-Eau Claire.  Students develop them while simultaneously gaining discipline-specific knowledge and skills. The college comprises eighteen academic departments in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, and a number of interdisciplinary programs. We provide coursework and other high-quality educational experiences for students majoring in our College programs; extensive general education coursework; and foundational or prerequisite courses for academic programs in the other colleges at UW-Eau Claire. The College also offers a number of graduate programs; faculty and students in the arts and sciences participate fully in UW-Eau Claire’s excellent international learning opportunities.

Teaching and learning occurs in traditional classrooms, electronic classrooms, laboratories and studios, in the field, and other settings. UW-Eau Claire is the UW System’s designated Center of Excellence for Faculty and Undergraduate Student Research Collaboration, and we are extremely proud of the excellent opportunities we provide for students to engage in independent or collaborative research within the arts and sciences.  Service activities offer additional learning opportunities as well as contributing to the welfare of the broader community in which we live and work.  We have a vibrant, talented faculty who are committed to the learning and success of students. Our faculty also engage in research, scholarship, and creative activities that advance their disciplines, provide unique learning opportunities for students, and serve the needs of the state and region. We are committed to creating an academic environment that provides educational opportunities for all, and that fosters an appreciation of the essential contribution that human diversity makes toward excellence in all fields.  I encourage you to explore opportunities in the College of Arts and Sciences by browsing the links to our departments and programs. I am confident that you will discover the excitement of a stimulating academic environment on a beautiful campus. If you have questions about the college or our programs that are not answered on our web pages, please drop me a note at mwood@uwec.edu. Thank you for your interest in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
