Classified Employees / Represented Graduate Assistants
Unless there is express authority in either the State Compensation Plan for classified non-represented employees or in the applicable collective bargaining agreement for represented employees, the cost of professional licenses and exam costs directly associated with and/or required to obtain the license are not to be paid from UW-administered funds.
The salary established for unclassified employees is intended to attract and retain staff based on the education, experience and special training required to perform their job. This includes the requirement that they have a professional license to hold a particular position. The cost of professional licenses and exam costs directly associated with and/or required to obtain the license are the responsibility of the employee and are not to be paid from UW-administered funds.
You should review Memberships (F34) for additional guidance related to when individual memberships are allowed. You should review Educational Assistance for Faculty and Staff (G25) for additional guidance related to when continuing education is permitted for coursework and training that may be associated with obtaining a level or degree of competence which qualifies the employee for certification in a professional organization. However, payments for actual certification and/or licensure are not allowed as listed above.
