WRIT 116.008 | The Secret History of Beverages

Lynsey Wolter | Fall 2013 | MW 9:00-10:50 AM & F 9:00-9:50 AM

In this section, we will explore the surprising history of six beverages: wine, beer, spirits, tea, coffee, and Coca-Cola. These beverages might seem pretty ordinary – but each one has played a central role in major events such as the invention of agriculture, the Enlightenment, and the rise of American capitalism, and each one has sparked vigorous debate about what we should drink and how we should drink it. During the first half of the semester, we’ll read A History of the World in 6 Glasses and A Secret History of Coffee, Coca and Cola. In the second half of the semester, you’ll develop your own research project, exploring a question that you pose about beverages or about the “secret history” of some other ordinary object.
