The 5th Grade Campus Tour Day is a field trip for fifth graders to be introduced to the idea of college and experience a university campus on a personal level. Over 1800 fifth grade students participated from 32 different schools. The tour allows students to explore a variety of activities on campus such as the residence halls, academic buildings, and experience a special class demonstration created just for them taught by UWEC faculty. Small groups of fifth graders are paired with two college mentors for the day. These mentors serve as their guide to the university. Students are encouraged to ask questions about the University, discuss future academic plans, and explore campus.
UWEC mentors also conduct a pre and post visit to the local (ECASD & Altoona) elementary schools that are participating in Tour Day. Mentors visit fifth grade classrooms before Tour Day to connect with students, get them excited, and inform them about Tour Day. After the event, mentors will again go into the 5th grade classrooms to re-connect with the students, answer questions, and review what they learned.
Fifth grade teachers and staff are invited to attend a Professional Development speaker on the topic of Collaborative Leadership by UWEC Education Studies Professor Mickey Kolis. For more teacher specific information, teachers should reference thier teacher handbooks received via email.
