Stream Ecologist

POSITION:
A 3-year post-doc position in Stream Ecology with the title “Research Specialist” is available beginning May 1, 2008.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should have a Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution by May 2008 and have experience in stream ecology with expertise in benthic invertebrates and algae.  The position will engage in research funded by an NSF-CAREER grant that investigates the relationship between stream benthic heterogeneity, species interactions, and ecosystem functioning with a focus on algal-grazer interactions.  The successful candidate will have a good working knowledge of benthic stream organisms, strengths in quantitative research methods and data analysis, and evidence of high quality written and oral communication skills.  In addition, candidates must have an aptitude for, and a desire to work with and mentor, undergraduate researchers.  The position will involve field research at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) in Colorado during summer and fall, and data analysis, writing, and mentoring undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire during winter and spring. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Overseeing primary NSF research at RMBL.
  • Preparing papers for publication and disseminating research results (the position includes funding for travel to one scientific meeting per annum).
  • Collaborating on the design and implementation of student research projects.
  • Managing the PI’s lab and coordinating PI and undergraduate researcher projects. 
  • Helping the PI plan and prepare a yearly workshop about “field science” for K-12 teachers.
  • In addition to the responsibilities listed above, there will be opportunities for teaching traditional and field courses.
