Facebook

Facebook is a social networking site that allows a user to connect with friends and network with clientele or administration. Facebook users can join a network based on school affiliation, geographic locations, and career choice. Users can update a status (similar to Twitter), track friends, share and view photos, blog, chat, and access games and applications. The only requirements to become a Facebook user are a valid email address and an age requirement of thirteen years old.

What can I do with it?

  • Create and advertise a class-related event. Invited Facebook users can contribute and take part.

  • Network with friends from around the country. A foreign languages class can use facebook to communicate with people from the around the world.

Twitter

Twitter is a real-time social networking and short messaging service that enables users to follow people that are relevant to them and access information as it is posted. From breaking news to musicians creative processes to updates from friends, Twitter plays a role in connecting people and keeping it simple via instant message, mobile texting, or the web. 

The Twitter widget to the right is displaying incoming "tweets" that involve integrating technology into the classroom. You can embed your custom Twitter widget on your website or in D2L.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a social networking site that has been developed as a professional network to help a user connect with a broad network of professionals and exchange knowledge and ideas. Whether looking for a career opportunity or building a professional resume, LinkedIn facilitates a connection to careers and business partners and creates a meeting ground for new opportunities. 

What can I do with it? 

  • Ask questions and engage in discussions with professionals to learn new about new ideas and concepts.
  • Display professional skills and qualifications and use LinkedIn as a supplement to a professional resume. 
  • Brainstorm successful online images that will assist with job opportunities.
