WOMEN'S TRACK IN THIRD AT WIAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

STEVENS POINT - The UW-Eau Claire women's track team has a strong hold on fourth place following the first day of the 2003 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held here today at Colman Field.

The Blugolds were led by the hurdling tandem of Breanna McMullen (Jr.-Fall Creek) and Jennifer Stafslien (So.-Onalaska/West Salem). McMullen and Stafslien finished 1-2 in preliminary action with times of 14.74 and 14.84, respectively.

Stafslien added a third place finish in the long jump competition. She took third with her jump of 5.52 meters. McMullen added a fourth place to her day when she finished the 200-meter dash in 25.67 seconds.

Jackie Bloemendaal (Fr.-Wright, MN/Cromwell-Wright) had a strong start to the heptathlon clearing 1.62 meters to tie for first in the high jump. Bloemendaal added an eighth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles and a tenth place finish in the shot put.

Eau Claire added four other third place finishes on the day. Sarah Kasabian (Jr.-East Peoria, IL/E.P.C.H.S.) took third in the 10,000-meter run, Melissa Wright (Jr.-Appleton/Kimberly) placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Stephanie Barnes (Fr.-Sauk City/Sauk Prairie) took third in the pole vault and the 4x800-meter relay team placed third with their time of 9:47.81.

In preliminary action Katie Miller (Jr.-Green Bay/Preble) advanced to the finals of the 100-meter dash with her time of 12.71 seconds.

The women's competition will resume tomorrow at 10 a.m.
