WOMEN'S TENNIS TAKES TWO OF THREE DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

MADISON - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team won the doubles championships at both the number one and two slots here today at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament played at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

After sitting out the first round with a bye, the number one doubles team of Alison Hover (Sr.-St.Cloud, MN/Tech) and Laurie Alonso (Fr.-Austin, MN) defeated River Falls' Jordan Anderson and Amanda Gray 8-5 in the second round. Hover and Alonso took home the championship with an 8-2 victory over Oshkosh's Debra Aschenbrenner and Mercedes Blanch.

The number two doubles team of Jenny Stafford (Jr.-Cross Plains/Middleton) and Megan Tauer (Sr.-Stillwater, MN) also had a bye in the first round. Stafford and Tauer came out in the second round and defeated Diana Treu and Lauren Young of Oshkosh to move onto the championship. In the championship, Stafford and Tauer were pushed to a tiebreaker, pulling it out 9-8 (7-4).

The tandem of Molly Cadwell (Jr.-Fridley, MN) and Becky Hollinger (So.-Jefferson) had a bye in the first round as well, but fell to the team from Whitewater in the second round.

The Blugolds will look to take home their tenth consecutive WIAC championship by sending out five number one seeds in singles competition tomorrow. Play is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.

Championship Matches
#1 - Hover/Alonso (EC) defeated Aschenbrenner/Blanch (OK) 8-2.
#2 - Stafford/Tauer (EC) defeated Alioto/Stamm (WW) 9-8 (7-4).
#3 - Chamberlain/Steimle (WW) defeated Dreschler/Pouba (OK) 8-4.
