WOMEN'S TENNIS PLACES FIFTH AT MIDWEST INVITATIONAL
MADISON - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team won three out of four dual meets en route to a fifth place finish at this weekend's Women's Midwest Invitational held in Madison.
The Blugolds advanced to the second round with a 5-4 victory over Carleton College. The Blugolds swept doubles competition in the meet with three close victories. Eau Claire's No. 1 doubles tandem of Alison Hover (Sr-St. Cloud, MN/Tech) and Jenny Stafford (Jr-Cross Plains/Middleton) earned a 9-8 victory while Eau Claire's No. 3 duo of Tara Anderson (So-Litchfield, MN) and Lindsay Lee (So-Eau Claire/Memorial) also took a thrilling victory, winning 9-8.
The Blugolds dropped their second meet of the invite 7-2 to Denison but bounced back in the consolation bracket with a 5-4 victory over St. Catherine. The Blugolds again swept doubles competition with all three teams winning 8-4. Stafford earned a three set victory in No. 2 singles competition and Katie Steffes (Fr-St. Joseph, MN/Apollo) won at the No. 5 singles spot 7-5, 6-4 to give the Blugolds the victory.
In the fifth place meet the Blugolds faced Albion and again won by a score of 5-4. This time the Blugolds earned the victory in big part to single play as the No. 2 doubles tandem of Megan Tauer (Sr-Stillwater, MN) and Molly Cadwell (Jr-Fridley, MN) were the only Eau Claire doubles team to win. Hover, Stafford, Anderson, and Annie Krueger (Fr-Reedsburg) all won their respective singles matches to give Eau Claire the victory.
The Blugolds will be in action next Friday and Saturday at the NCAA Regional Tournament.
