WRESTLING ANNOUNCES TEAM AWARD WINNERS

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – UW-Eau Claire wrestling coach Don Parker has announced the team award winners for the 2007-08 season.

Taking MVP honors this year was Josh Holforty (Jr.-Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy), who wrestled at 197 pounds. Holforty advanced to nationals after receiving an at-large bid following a third place finish in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships. At the NCAA Championship, Holforty made it all the way to the semifinals after winning two matches but lost the next two and was forced to forfeit due to an injury in the fifth place match. His sixth place finish overall earned him All-American status. Only seven other Blugolds in program history have earned All-American honors, with only four others earning the recognition since joining the NCAA. Holforty finished the season with an overall record of 30-11, while accumulating four pins.

Brandon Page (Jr.-Holmen, Wis.) received the team’s most improved award this year. Page completed his first season with the Blugolds with a record of 11-14 at 125 pounds. Page saw steady improvement during the season and ended up taking fifth place at the WIAC Championships.

Winning honors for the most pins this season was Joey Miller (Sr.-Lake Tomahawk, Wis.), who recorded eight. Four of Miller’s pins came in under two minutes and six came under 2:30. He completed the season with an overall record of 22-9 at 174 pounds and finished in third place at the WIAC Championships.

Andy Miller (Jr.-Appleton, Wis./North), who earned National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American recognition this season, will serve as a team captain next year along with Holforty.

The Blugolds took fifth place at the WIAC Championships and completed their season with an 18-22 overall record. In the conference, Eau Claire finished fourth with a record of 3-3.
