WOMEN’S HOCKEY OPENS CONFRENCE PLAY WITH A WIN
MEQUON, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey team defeated Concordia University (Wis.) 1-0 on Friday night in the first ever game between the two programs. The victory was the second in a row for the Blugolds as they improved their record to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Friday night was also the second game in a row that the Blugolds shutout their opponent. The Blugolds controlled play most of the night outshooting the Falcons 42-15; despite their large edge in shots on goal, the Blugolds were not able to get on the scoreboard until midway through the third period. The Blugolds first and only goal came on the power play when Lauren Havard (Jr.-San Angelo, TX/Arapahoe) put the puck past the Falcon’s goaltender at 6:00 of the third period. The goal was Havard’s second of the season and was assisted by Katie Lawler (Fr.-Cottage Grove, MN/Hill-Murray). The Blugold’s special teams units had a great night going 1-3 on the power play and 6-6 on the penalty kill. In net, Danika Porter (Fr.-Rosemount, MN/South St. Paul) had a stellar showing stopping all 15 shots she faced for her first career shutout. Porter made most of her 15 saves in the first period when she stopped nine shots. Porter is now 2-2-0 this season with a goals against average of 1.26. The Blugolds will hope to improve their conference record to 2-0, and the Falcons will hope to earn their first victory in program history when the two teams take the ice for a rematch tomorrow at noon in Mequon.
