BIG FIRST PERIOD LEADS TO WOMEN’S HOCKEY VICTORY

HANCOCK, Mich. – The UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey team bounced back from yesterday’s 6-0 defeat at the hands of UW-Superior to blank Finlandia University (MI) today 4-0.

The win moves the Blugolds to 7-5-0 while Finlandia drops to 3-7-1.

Eau Claire got off to a fast start, putting up three goals in the first period. Christine Dickinson (Fr. – Layton, UT/Shattuck St. Mary’s) struck first at 4:27 with an evensided shot. Meghan Lorenz (Fr. –Minnetonka, MN/Wayzata) and Katie Lawler (Fr.-Cottage Grove, MN/Hill-Murray) provided assists. At 7:18, Kristin Faber (Fr.-Austin, MN) put in an evenmanned goal of her own with Margaret Campbell (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) and Maddi Hammer (Fr.-Owatonna, MN) assisting. Hammer came up with the final score of the first with an advantage strike at 12:01. Dickinson was in on the assists along with Michelle Stohr (So.-South St. Paul, MN). The Blugolds outshot Finlandia 25-to-2 in the dominating period.

The Blugolds again outshot the Lions in the second by a 17-to-6 count, but recorded no goals. The third saw Eau Claire take 17 shots again and Finlandia take five. Stohr also tallied the final goal of the game at 4:27 in the third. Lorenz fed the puck on the evensided score.

Danika Porter (Fr.-Rosemount, MN/South St. Paul) recorded the shutout in goal while recording 13 saves. The Blugolds kept Lion goalie Annika Danielson busy with 59 shots.

The Blugolds had twice as many penalties than Finlandia with six and went 1-for-3 in power plays. Finlandia went 0-for-4.

The Blugolds will face No. 2 UW-Stevens Point next weekend when it travels for games on both Friday and Saturday.
