WOMEN’S GOLF IN 11th AT DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIP

WAVERLY, Iowa – The UW-Eau Claire women’s golf team completed day one of the 2008 NCAA Division III Championships in 11th place out of 20 teams at Centennial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly, Iowa.

Methodist University (N.C.), which has won the national title the past 10 seasons, is in first with 307 strokes. Southwestern University (Texas) finished the day in second with 309, while DePauw University (Ind.) shot 315 for a third place spot. Eau Claire totaled 333 strokes in its 11th place finish.

On the individual side, Stephanie Mingos of Rhodes College shot a 71, one under par, to lead the field after day one. Methodist University’s Susan Martin is in second with 74.

Meghan Sobotta (Sr.-Arcadia, Wis.) is currently leading the Blugolds with 78 strokes, tied for 14th place. Torie Ives (So.-Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) is two strokes behind Sobotta, tied for 30th place. With 85 strokes during the first day of competition is Bri Obermueller (So.-River Falls, Wis.), who is tied for 65th place overall. Both Sarah Hansen (Sr.-Bangor, Wis.) and Katie Swift (Fr.-Onalaska, Wis.) shot 90 strokes today and are tied for 95th place. Ives, Obermueller and Swift all recorded birdies today for Eau Claire.

The Blugolds will be back at Centennial Oaks Golf Club for day two of the championships tomorrow. Eau Claire will begin teeing off at 12:50 p.m.
