IVES AND THOMPSON SHARE TOP SPOT, WOMEN’S GOLF WINS INVITE

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Eau Claire women’s golf team won the eight-team Stevens Point Invitational today at the Stevens Point Country Club and Torie Ives (Fr.-Osseo, WI/Osseo-Fairchild) and Jesse Thompson (Sr.-Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) shared medallist honors.

The Blugolds shot the second lowest round of the day with a 321, but still claimed first place with a score of 643. The 643 is the seventh lowest 36-hole score in team history. UW-Stevens Point had the lowest final round with a 318 and finished in second place with a 647. In third place was UW-Whitewater with a score of 683. UW-Oshkosh finished in fourth place with a 688 and St. Joseph’s finished in fifth with a 738.

Torie Ives had the low round of the day as she posted a 75 (+2) for a two-round total of 158 to claim one-half of the medallist spot. Ives was tied for eighth place at the beginning of the day.

Jesse Thompson shot a final round 78 (+5) for a total of 158 to claim the other half of the medallist spot. Meghan Sobotta (Jr.-Arcadia, WI) tied for third place, one shot back, with a total score of 159.

First round leader Kate Borman (Fr.-Kenosha, WI/Bradford) fell with a two-round score of 168. Sarah Hansen (Jr.-Bangor, WI) had a total score of 194.

The Blugolds have finished no worse than fourth in the five tournaments this fall.

Next up for the Blugolds will be the 2006 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Golf Championships held at Windwood in Watertown. The action gets underway at 10 a.m. next Saturday.
