WIAC "RUNS DOWN" COMPETITION AT MIDWEST REGIONAL
COLFAX - Seven teams from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference advanced to national competition while two others and 15 individuals also qualified between both men and women at today's 2003 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional meet in Colfax.
On the men's side UW-Oshkosh took first place, with six runners finishing in the top 18, to give them a score of 35. David Cisewski led the way with a time of 24:44, finishing second overall. Nick Boehlke was second on the team just one second back of Cisewski for third place overall. Matt Groose was the third Titan runner to finish in the top five with a time of 24:52, good for fifth place.
North Central College finished in second place overall with 97 points with Tim Nelson finishing in a time of 25:03 and in seventh place. Pat Rizzo finished four seconds back of Nelson to finish in 10th place. UW-Stevens Point placed third in the competition with 98 ponits to advance to nationals, with Curtis Johnson leading the way. Johnson finished in a time of 25:03 for fourth place.
UW-La Crosse and Whitewater rounded out the five men's teams and both advance to national competition. The Eagles scored 110 points and were led by Mike Herlihy, who took 13th place with a time of 25:13. The Warhawks advance with a score of 135 and were led by Chad Carstens who finished ninth overall in a time of 25:04.
Eight members qualified individually for nationals on the men's side, including the individual winner of the race, Ryan Kleimenhagen from UW-Platteville. Tom Haxton took sixth overall from the University of Chicago with a time of 25:02 to advance. Dave Huber from Stout was the third individual qualifier with a time of 25:11. The other qualifiers were Mark Heintz from Elmhurst, Patrick Sullivan from the University of Chicago, Reggie Jonaitis from North Central College, Randy Bill from Augustana, Zach Barr from Monmouth College, and Teage O'Connor from the University of Chicago.
In women's competition, UW-Stevens Point took first place with 76 points to earn a trip to nationals. Teresa Stanley led the way for the Pointers with Leah Herlache finishing second on the team. UW-Oshkosh also earned a trip with 98 points and will be joined by UW-La Crosse and University of Chicago. Washington University and Chicago both tied for the fourth and final qualifying trip to nationals but Chicago won the tie breaker.
Individually, Kathleen Brice from Elmhurst was the first qualifier with a second place finish in a time of 20:54. Amy Aleshire from Principia finished in third to earn a trip to nationals. Kristen Igreslski from Carroll took fifth place to also qualify for national competition. Other qualifiers were Jackie Mulrooney from UW-Platteville, Maggie Grabow from Washington University, Amana Kuca from UW-Stevens Point, and Jesi Christiansen from Wheaton.
