WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ANNOUNCES TEAM AWARD WINNERS
EAU CLAIRE – UW-Eau Claire head women’s basketball coach Tonja Englund announced the 2006-07 team award winners this past weekend at the team’s post-season banquet. Heidi Arciszewski (So.-Thorp) was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. A first team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) selection, Arciszewski led the Blugolds in points (12.6 per game), minutes played (31.4 a game) and both free throws made (108) and attempted (130). Arciszewski made more free throws than any other Blugold attempted this season. Heather Witt (So.-Kendall/Royall) was named both Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved. Witt started the final 12 games of the year and led the Blugolds in steals (67) while ranking second in assists (53) and third in made three-point field goals (16). Missy Fremstad (So.-Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) was named the team’s Rookie of the Year. Fremstad started 14 of 27 games played this year ranking fourth on the team in assists (44). Angie Foschi (Jr.-Andover, MN/Anoka) was presented with the Blugold Award. Foschi played in 11 games including one start before an ACL injury ended her season. Foschi was one of three captains for the Blugolds along with Rachel Mueggenborg (Jr.-West Salem) and Amanda Zenner (Jr.-Medford). Arciszewski and Michelle Burns (Jr.-Eau Claire/North) were each named to the All-WIAC first team while Burns was also named to the All-WIAC Defensive Team. Both players were also named the WIAC Athlete of the Week this past season. The Blugolds finished the season with an overall record of 19-9 finishing second in the WIAC with an 11-5 mark. At home the Blugolds went 13-0 last season and have won 17 straight games which started back on January 28, 2006. Eau Claire advanced to the finals of the WIAC post-season tournament with a roster that had no seniors this past season. The Blugolds posted a six-game improvement in the win column from the 2005-06 season.
