WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TO HOST FINAL REGULAR SEASON HOME GAME
EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Eau Claire women’s basketball team will host its final regular season home game this Saturday when it faces UW-Oshkosh in the second game of a men and women’s doubleheader at Zorn Arena. The Blugolds are coming off of a thrilling come from behind 68-65 overtime victory over UW-River Falls on Wednesday night. In that game, Rachel Mueggenborg (Jr.-West Salem, WI) set a team record with seven, three-pointers. Her seventh was the game winner with 36 seconds left. Eau Claire is undefeated at Zorn Arena this season with a 10-0 record and has won the last 14 games going back to last season. The Blugolds are currently tied for second place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with UW-Whitewater with a 9-4 record. Eau Claire has an overall record of 15-7. The Titans are coming off of a 70-45 loss to 12th-ranked UW-Stout last Saturday. The Blue Devils started the game out-scoring the Titans 14-2 and never looked back. Oshkosh is 4-9 in the WIAC and 8-12 overall. In the first meeting this season, the Blugolds were held scoreless for the final 3:35 seconds of the game, while the Titans scored their final 11 points from the free throw line to win by a score of 48-42. Brittanni Hakanson (So.-Wheeler, WI/Boyceville) led Eau Claire with 12 points and Whitney Tyriver led Oshkosh with 21 points. The Blugolds have been a second half team this season as they have out-scored their opponents in the second part of the game 746-634. Eau Claire has 50 more assists than their opponents this season, while committing 63 less turnovers. The Blugolds have a turnover margin of +2.86, which is the best in the conference The Blugolds are led in scoring by the two-headed punch of Michelle Burns (Jr.-Eau Claire, WI/North) and Heidi Arciszewski (So.-Thorp, WI). Burns averages 12.7 points per game and Arciszewski averages 12.5 points per game. Burns leads the Blugolds in rebounds as she averages 8.1 boards per game, which is third best in the conference. Arciszewski is the second in the WIAC with a free throw percentage of 85.7%. Amanda Zenner (Jr.-Medford, WI) has 56 assists and Heather Witt (So.-Kendall, WI/Royall) has 45 steals to lead the team. Both the Blugolds and the Titans are at the top of the WIAC in free throw shooting. Eau Claire is the best in the conference, shooting 76% from the line and Oshkosh is second, shooting 71% from the line. The Titans are 1-6 on the road this season with their only win coming at UW-Superior on January 20th. Whitney Tyriver leads the Titans in scoring and is the second leading scorer in the WIAC, averaging 15.8 points per game. Tyriver went 6-for-6 at the free throw line at the end of the first game between the two schools. Tyriver is the best free throw shooter in the conference as she shoots 86% from the free throw line. Kayla Sharpee leads the Titans in rebounding with 143 rebounds. Becky Knapp is second in the WIAC as she averages 1.65 three-point field goals per contest. The Blugolds are 26-41 all-time against the Titans and have lost the last seven meetings.
