WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TO HOST STEVENS POINT WEDNESDAY
EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Eau Claire women’s basketball team will look to remain unbeaten at home this Wednesday night when it hosts UW-Stevens Point at Zorn Arena. Eau Claire is 9-0 at Zorn Arena this season with just two regular season home games remaining. The Blugolds are 13-7 overall and 7-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Eau Claire is currently in second place in the WIAC, a half-game ahead in the win column of Stevens Point and Whitewater. Stevens Point currently has an overall record of 14-4 and is 6-4 in the conference. In the first meeting this season, the Pointers had an early 10-0 run in the first five minutes of the game and would not relinquish the lead as they defeated the Blugolds 64-44. The Blugolds shot just 28% for the game, while the Pointers shot 50%. The Blugolds are coming off of come from behind victory at UW-Platteville on Saturday in which they trailed by eight points in the second and wound up winning by eight, 59-51. It was the first conference road win for the Blugolds. Brittanni Hakanson (So.-Wheeler, WI/Boyceville) led the Blugolds with 11 points and Heather Witt (So.-Kendall, WI/Royall) had a career-high eight rebounds Michelle Burns (Jr.-Eau Claire, WI/North) and Heidi Arciszewski (So.-Thorp, WI) are both averaging 12.6 points per game to lead the Blugolds. Both Burns and Arciszewski were held below double-figures in scoring against Platteville on Saturday. It was just the fifth time this season that Arciszewski was held below double-figures in scoring. The Pointers are coming off of a 46-45 victory at UW-Oshkosh last Wednesday. In that game the Pointers did not score over the final six minutes and the Titans had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but missed a 10-foot jump shot. Stevens Point is second in the conference in scoring, averaging 69.1 points per game. The Pointers are on top of the WIAC with a margin of victory of over 14 points. The Pointers are also the top shooting team in the conference with a field goal percentage of 46% and a three-point field goal percentage of 38%. Stevens Point averages over 10-more rebounds per game than their opponents, which is top in the WIAC and edge the Blugolds with a 0.80 assist-to-turnover ratio. Haley Houghton averages 10 points per game to lead the Pointers. Hathalie Lechault leads the Pointers in rebounds with an average of 5.8 boards per game and she is second in the conference with 38 blocked shots. Katie Weber is second in the WIAC with a 1.57 assist-to-turnover ratio. The Pointers own the advantage in the all-time series with a 34-32 record. Stevens Point has won four of the last five meetings, including the last three. The Blugolds and the Pointers tip-off at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Zorn Arena.
