VOLLEYBALL SET TO COMPETE IN AUGSBURG TOURNEY

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team will compete in its second tournament of the year this weekend when it heads to the Augsburg Tournament in Minneapolis.

The team is 3-1 after hosting the Labor Day Tourney. They lost the opener 3-0 to Gustavus Adolphus College (MN), but then took 3-0 games from UW-River Falls and Hamline University (MI) and a 3-1 contest over UM-Morris. The Blugolds took second in the tournament behind the 4-0 Gustavus squad and placed Nikki Peterson (Sr.-North St. Paul/North) on the all-tournament team.

Peterson posted double-digit kills in every match but one over the weekend and leads the team in that category at 44. Katie Fox (Jr.-Chippewa Falls/Chi-Hi) has 36 behind her and is hitting .188 while Peterson has a .348 mark.

The team’s assist leaders are Amanda Lessner (Fr.-Watertown) and Emily Haese (Jr.-Mishicot), who have 83 and 74 assists, respectively.

On defense, the two who stand out are Heather Harnell (Sr.-Minnetonka, MN) and Abby Freiborg (Jr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West). Harnell’s 66 digs and Freiborg’s 47 easily rank best for the Blugolds.

This weekend’s action starts on Friday at 2 p.m. against Lawrence University before the Blugolds take on the home team at 6 p.m.

The Vikings are 2-2 thus far after winning 3-0 over Alverno College and 3-1 over Wisconsin Lutheran College and losing 3-0 to North Park University (IL) and to North Central College (IL) at the Wisconsin Lutheran College Tournament.

Augsburg is 1-3 after the Northwestern College Tourney. They lost 3-0 to Carleton College (MN) and 3-1 to both St. Mary (NE) and St. Olaf (MN). Augsburg defeated North Central University (MN) 3-0 for their win.

Saturday’s first contest is scheduled for 9 a.m. against Northwestern College (MN). The weekend’s outcomes will determine the second game’s time and opponent.

Northwestern hosted the Northwestern College Tourney and went 2-2. They won 3-1 over Macalester College (MN) and North Central University while losing 3-0 to Bethel University (MN) and 3-1 to St. Mary (NE).

None of the scheduled opponents are ranked, but the Blugolds were placed 18th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll.
