MCKINNEY NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-AMERICAN

UW-Eau Claire softball standout Mallory McKinney (Jr.-Brooklyn Park, MN/Champlin Park) has been named to the 2006 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NCAA Division III All-America Second Team.

McKinney was also tabbed as a Second Team All-American her freshman season in 2004. She was one of three Blugolds named to the NFCA Great Lakes All-Region First Team and thus eligible for All-America consideration. The other two were sophomore Jill Janke (Black River Falls) and junior Rachel Paulus (Wisconsin Rapids).

McKinney had previously been named to the All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team for a third straight year and for the second time in her career was tabbed as the WIAC Pitcher of the Year, sharing the honor this year with UW-Oshkosh's Ronessa Stampfli.

McKinney had a record-setting season in helping the Blugolds win a third straight WIAC regular season title and the WIAC tournament championship, earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Rock Island Regional and finish with a 37-6 season mark.

She fashioned a 26-3 pitching record with an 0.72 ERA, striking out 183 with just 14 walks in 184 2/3 innings. Among the school records she set or tied this season were wins in a season, strikeouts in a season, strikeouts for a career (408), complete games in a season (24-tied), shutouts in a season (13) and lowest ERA in a season. At one point in the season, she pitched 61 consecutive scoreless innings.

As the No. 3 hitter in the lineup, McKinney also batted .333 with a .553 slugging percentage as she rapped eight doubles, one triple and seven home runs. She led the team in RBI with 33.

McKinney becomes only the third Blugold to earn All-American honors in multiple seasons. The other two were first baseman Jill Schoenike (1997 & 1999) and pitcher Heidi Bergstrom (1999, 2000).
