MEN’S TENNIS HANDS OUT TEAM AWARDS

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – UW-Eau Claire head men’s tennis coach Tom Gillman has announced the team award winners for the 2007-08 season.

Lars Olson (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) received Player of the Year honors this season. Olson posted the most victories for the Blugolds with an overall record of 22-6. He did not lose a match at No. 5 or No. 7 singles, going 5-0 and 7-0, respectively. He also went 2-1 at No. 1 and No. 2 and 6-4 in the No. 4 spot. On the doubles side, Olson partnered with Kevin Fawcett (So.-Madison, Wis./Verona) and went 16-4 at No. 2. He also competed four times with Eric Wollum (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and had records of 2-1 at No. 1 doubles and 1-0 at No. 3 doubles.

C.J. Rose (Sr.-Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) was honored with the Team Award. This season Rose was 12-2, going undefeated at No. 6 (6-0) and No. 4 (1-0) singles. He also went 3-1 at No. 1 and 2-1 at No. 5 singles. In doubles, Rose competed with four teammates and accumulated an overall record of 20-5.

The Blugold Award went to Erik Brandner (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial). He went 17-4 in singles for the season, posting 1-0 records at No. 2 and No. 3, an 8-2 record at No. 4 and a 7-2 record at No. 5. He also partnered with three teammates in doubles and had an overall record of 2-3.

The team’s Most Improved Award was given to Phil Loprinzi (So.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo). Last season Loprinzi went 9-6 overall while he improved to 18-8 this season. He went 9-2 at No. 3, 7-4 at No. 2 and 2-2 in the No. 1 spot. Loprinzi competed exclusively at No. 1 doubles and posted an overall mark of 21-6.

Brett Gressick (Sr.-De Pere, Wis.) received the Coaches Award. Gressick went 6-4 during the season with records of 2-1 at No. 1, 2-3 at No. 6 and 1-0 at No. 4 and No. 5. He also went 3-2 in doubles play with two different partners.

The Blugolds ended their season with an overall record of 24-5, accumulating nine more wins than a season ago. In coach Gillman’s seven years with the team, the Blugolds have not produced a better record. In the final 15 meets of the season, Eau Claire went 14-1, falling only to NCAA Tournament participant UW-Whitewater.
