SWIMMING AND DIVING FALLS TO LA CROSSE

LA CROSSE – The UW-Eau Claire men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell to UW-La Crosse today, with the men losing by a score of 152-90 and the women losing by a score of 161-82.

Both the men’s and women’s teams fall to 1-2 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) dual meets.

The only Blugold winner for men’s swimming was Kris Metje (Fr.-Cape Girardeau, MO/Central), who won both the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:20.00 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:57.95. Both were his fastest of the year.

The men took the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Donnie Vollmer (So.-Superior, WI) took first in the one-meter diving event with a score of 240.65. Eau Claire’s Kenny Ritt (Fr.-Racine, WI/Horlick) finished second in that event with a score of 231.65.

The two switched places in the three-meter diving event as Ritt took first with a score of 253.90 and Vollmer took second with a score of 239.60.

Brian Jordan (Jr.-Madison, WI /West) finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.27 and the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay “A” team of Jordan, Brett Olsen (Fr.-New Berlin, WI/West Allis Hale), Patrick Finley (So.-Waunakee, WI), and Bill Peterson (So.-Lake Elmo, MN/North St. Paul) also finished second with a time of 3:22.51.

On the women’s side, the only winners for swimmers were Jaclyn Blank (Fr.-Byron, MN) in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:08.79 and Emily Viau (Sr.-Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:28.28. Both are the fastest times in those events this year The Blugolds actually swept the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle with Blank finishing second and Amanda Kroger (Jr.-Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) finishing third.

Sarah Myers (Jr.-Eau Claire, WI/North) won the one-meter diving event with a score of 240.55, her top score of the season.

Amy Stewart (Fr.-South Milwaukee, WI) finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:23.81. The 400-yard freestyle relay “A” team of Viau, Blank, Emily Diehl (Jr.-Prairie du Sac, WI/Sauk Prairie), and Kyle Welke (Jr.-Eau Claire, WI/North) also finished second with a time of 3:47.19.

The swimming and diving teams are now done with competition in the year 2006. They will go to San Juan, Puerto Rico on January 3rd for a winter training trip. Their next home meet will be against Macalester College (MN) on January 19th.
