SWIMMING AND DIVING FALL TO WIAC RIVAL

EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Eau Claire men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams lost to UW-Stevens Point today in the first conference meet and first home dual meet of the year.

The men’s team lost by a 168-73 score while the women were beat 189-54.

The only Blugolds to win on the men side were the divers. Kenny Ritt (Fr.-Racine/Horlick) took the three-meter event 245.90 while Donnie Vollmer (So.-Superior) followed him at 230.25. The two switched spots on the one-meter boards with Vollmer garnering 260.15 and Ritt taking 254.00.

Several Blugolds were runner-up competitors. Pat Finley (So.-Waunakee) swam a 1:53.41 200-yard freestyle while Kris Metje (Fr.-Cape Girardeau, MO/Central) had a 2:14.14 time in the 200-yard butterfly. In the 200-yard backstroke Cale Schmidt-Jackson (Sr.-Duluth, MN/East) swam 2:06.88. The ‘A’ team took second in the 400-yard freestyle relay at 3:25.56.

Sarah Myers (Jr.-Eau Claire/North) was the lone Blugold to win for the women. She had a 229.20 total on the one-meter boards for the victory.

Many more took second place. Jaclyn Blank (Fr.-Byron, MN) swam 11:17.49 in the 1000-yard freestyle. Ann Grossklaus (Fr.-Wausau/West) went 55.91 in the 100-yard freestyle. Emily Diehl (Jr.-Prairie du Sac/Sauk Prairie) had a 200-yard breaststroke of 2:34.59.

The next meet for Eau Claire is also a WIAC meet. The teams are in action at UW-River Falls next Saturday with the event starting at 1:00 p.m.
