SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS PREPARE FOR FIRST WIAC DUAL MEET

EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Eau Claire men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will have their first conference dual meet as well as their first home dual meet this Friday when they face UW-Stevens Point in the McPhee Pool.

The team is under new leadership this year, with Head Coach Jerry Kollross taking the reins from previous coach Rob Welcher. The women’s team has seen a dramatic increase in freshman this season, with the largest part of the squad being first-year Blugolds. On the men’s side, the areas of interest are the family ties. The two sets of brothers include the Schultz family with Matt (Fr.-Oakdale, MN/North) and Peter Schultz (So.-Oakdale, MN/North). The Petersons are represented by Nick (Sr.-Lake Elmo, MN/North St. Paul), Bill (So.-Lake Elmo, MN/North St. Paul), and Joe (Fr.-Lake Elmo, MN/North St. Paul). Ashley (Fr.-Germantown) and Emily Cooper (Jr.-Germantown) carry the sibling trend to the women’s team.

The team has only been in two events thus far. The men and women teamed up in the Midwest Coed Relay Meet against UW-Oshkosh to win 164-124. Eau Claire only lost one event the entire meet.

The next meet was a dual meet versus MSU-Mankato, where both the men and women lost. The women fell 148.5-91.5. Meanwhile, the men had a score of 145-90.

The standouts for the men’s team were divers Kenny Ritt (Fr.-Racine/Horlick) and Donnie Vollmer (So.-Superior). Ritt took the one-meter boards with 224.90 points while Vollmer won the three-meter event at 225.40.

Emily Diehl (Jr.-Prairie du Sac/Sauk Prairie) was the only Blugold to win multiple events. She took the top spot in the 200-yard IM in 2:20.64 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.42. Jaclyn Blank (Fr.-Byron, MN) cruised to a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a 2:03.14 time and Ann Grossklaus (Fr.-Wausau/West) grabbed gold in the 100-yard freestyle on a 56.53 race.

This meet will be the first meet of the year for the Pointers. Action is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
