SWIMMING AND DIVING IN THIRD AND FOURTH AFTER DAY ONE

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Eau Claire men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed the first of three days at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships with the women in third and the men in fourth.

The women’s team has 120 points while UW-Stevens Point leads with 292.5. UW-La Crosse sits in front of Eau Claire with a 270 score. Teams trailing the Blugolds include UW-Whitewater at 95 points, UW-Oshkosh with 86 and UW-River Falls with 78.5.

The men have 139 points for their fourth place position. Again the Pointers and Eagles take first and second, this time with scores of 261 and 260. The Warhawks are third at 141. Oshkosh is in fifth with a 116 tally while River Falls’ 56 mark is sixth.

The only Blugold champion of the day was Bryan Dykstra (Jr.-Racine/Horlick) in the 1-meter boards. He had 480.10 points to take the top spot along with 20 points. In the process he defeated last year’s defending champion, Jacob Chadderdon of Oshkosh. He won the event with 444.60 points last year, but came up short with 470.60 today. Chadderdon was also the Co-Diver of the Meet last year with Eau Claire’s Scott Heatwole.

In the same event today, Brandon Blaisdell (So.-Prior Lake, MN) scored 350.65 and took fourth with its 15 points. Kenny Ritt (Fr.-Racine/Horlick) nabbed 14 points off a 350.00 performance that took fifth.

The swimmers netted point gains of 10 or more in a pair of races. Nick Peterson (Sr.-Lake Elmo, MN/North St. Paul) swam a 2:02.03 200 IM for sixth and 13 points. Cale-Schmidt-Jackson (Sr.-Duluth, MN/East), Peter Schultz (So.-Oakdale, MN/North), Matt Schultz (Fr.-Oakdale, MN/North), and Patrick Finley (So.-Waunakee) took 30 points with a 3:37.22 fourth-place time in the 400 medley relay.

The Blugold women also had a few placements that grabbed over 10 points. Emily Viau (Sr.-Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) took the highest spot for the Blugolds with a tie for third in the 500 freestyle on a 5:15.80 time. It collected 15.5 points. Emily Diehl (Jr.-Prairie du Sac/Sauk Prairie) clocked in at 2:14.49 in the 200 IM for fourth and 15 points.

The relay team of Ane Klomps (Jr.-Rochester, MN/Mayo), Kyle Welke (Jr.-Eau Claire/North), Missy Kleist (Fr.-Eau Claire/North), and Ann Grossklaus (Fr.-Wausau/West) swam a 1:42.79 200 freestyle relay for third place and 32 points.

Sarah Myers (Jr.-Eau Claire/North) placed fifth in the 3-meter dives with a 399.70 score that gained 14 points for the Blugolds.

Tomorrow’s prelims begin at 10 a.m. and the finals will run at 7:45 p.m. in Stevens Point.
