Matt Loen enters his first season
as interim head men’s hockey coach for the Blugolds.
Loen takes over as head coach after spending two seasons
as an assistant to Luke Strand, who left to take an assistant
position with the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey
League in late August.
Loen played for the Blugolds from
1991-95 and was a first team All-American in 1994-95,
a first team All-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association
(NCHA) selection in 1993-94 and 1994-95 in addition to
being an All-Wisconsin State University Conference (WSUC)
in 1993-94. Voted team MVP in 1994-95, Loen is listed
several times in the Blugold record book including tied
for third in assists in a season (37), fifth in points
in a season (56), tied for eighth for career points scored
per game (1.24) and tied for 10th in career points (120)
during his 97-game career. Loen also recorded one career
hat trick, doing so against Bemidji State (MN) on December
3, 1994.
After his career with the Blugolds
concluded Loen went on to a professional career which
saw him play in over 500 games. Loen was the Rookie of
the Year in the United Hockey League (UHL) for the Madison
Monsters. Loen also played for the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks
of the American Hockey League (AHL), the top farm team
for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, and Milwaukee Admirals of
the International Hockey League (IHL), the top team in
Nashville Predators’ farm system. During his years
as a professional Loen was a multiple-time minor league
All-Star.
Loen and his wife, Carla, reside
in Eau Claire with their children Max (6) and Emma (4).
