MEN’S GOLF HEADS TO NATIONALS

EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Eau Claire men’s golf team was selected as one of 35 schools to participate at the NCAA Division III National Championships from May 15-18.

The action will take place at Hawthorns Golf and Country Club and Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel and Fishers, IN.

This will be the 19th appearance at nationals for the squad. The team was selected as member of Pool B, which had independent schools and schools that are members of a conference that doesn’t meet the requirements for automatic qualification. Seven other teams were selected from Group B.

The Blugolds will be sending Mike Greer (Sr.-Vadnais Heights, MN/White Bear Lake), Rob Norris (Sr.-St. Paul, MN/Cretin-Derham Hall), Mason Milner (Jr.-Onalaska), Ryan Brockhaus (Sr.-Mayville), and Tyler Leis (Sr.-Reedsburg). Coach Jim Maguire said that every member of the team had a legitimate reason to be selected and that the strength of the team comes from its depth.

Leis has the lowest spring average of the competitors at 74.8. He has placed in the top 10 three times. He tied for second at the Border Battle, took third at the St. Olaf Invite, and tied for ninth at the Buena Vista Spring Invite. He has been the best Blugold golfer three times. Norris has averaged a 75 and took first overall at the Lawrence Viking Invite. He also tied for fifth at the Border Battle and has led the team twice.

Greer has averaged a 76.5 and tied for fourth at the Lawrence Viking Invite. He has been second for the team twice this season. Milner is averaging 77.2 with a tie for 11th at the Border Battle being his highest placement. He has been the third-best on his team three times. Brockhaus has a 78.8 average. His top finish is a tie for 11th at the Border Battle. He was the third best for the team that day, as well.

The 14th-ranked Blugolds have taken the St. Olaf Invite and the Border Battle this season. They also tied for third at the Lawrence Viking Invite and tied for fourth at the Bobby Krig Invitational. The team tied for ninth at the Buena Vista Spring Invite.

If the team is on its game, it has a shot at the national championship, Coach Maguire said.

It all begins on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.
