MEN'S BASKETBALL TO HOST SUPERIOR ON WEDNESDAY
EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire men's basketball team will ride a 6-1 record into a conference match up against the Yellowjackets from UW-Superior Wednesday night at 7:00 at W.L. Zorn Arena.
The Blugolds are fresh off a Saturday night win over UW-Stout in which Jason Larson (Sr-Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin) and Dan Archambault (So-Oshkosh/West) each scored in the twenties en route to the 80-74 victory over the Blue Devils. The win against Stout improved the Blugolds Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record to 2-0.
With a victory over Superior the Blugolds would match their conference win total from the 2001-2002 season. The Blugolds did not get their third conference win until the 21st game of the season last year as they finished with just a 3-13 record in conference play. Eau Claire will look to match that total in just their eighth game of the season Wednesday night.
The Yellowjackets come into Wednesday night's match up looking for their first conference win. Superior sponsors a record of 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in WIAC action. The Yellowjackets last saw action Saturday night when they fell to UW-Whitewater 57-48 at Whitewater.
Despite losing three contributing seniors from a year ago, the Yellowjackets are looking to make an impact in the WIAC this season. They return seven players from last year's roster including Don DeFoe and Tony Peterson. DeFoe finished second on the Yellowjackets roster last season as he averaged 12.2 points per game while also pulling down 3.8 rebounds per game. Peterson has showed his versatility finishing second in the WIAC last season in steals per game with 1.92 and third in conference with 3.92 assists per game.
Eau Claire has an all-time record of 110-54 against Superior, dating back to the 1916-1917 season. The Blugolds had won 11 straight against the Yellowjackets until last January when Superior topped Eau Claire 68-51 in Superior. The Blugolds split last season's series with Superior as they defeated the Yellowjackets 72-56 at W.L. Zorn Arena in December. The Blugolds have not lost to Superior at home since March of 1978, a stretch of 27 games.
Normal admission prices will be charged for the game as tickets can be purchased at W.L. Zorn Arena.
