BLUGOLDS 16TH IN FINAL FALL DIRECTORS’ CUP STANDINGS
CLEVELAND, Ohio. – After a very successful fall season for UW-Eau Claire, the Blugolds find themselves in 16th place in the fall edition of the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup standings out of more than 420 schools in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. This year, the Blugolds have already gained 169 points, scoring in four different national championships. Eau Claire gained 66 points for an eighth place finish in women’s cross country, 53 points for a ninth place finish in football and 25 points each for 33rd place finishes in women’s soccer and volleyball. This is the third highest finish the Blugolds have ever achieved in the fall standings in the award’s 13 year history. Following the 1997 fall season, the Blugolds were in eighth place with 110 points, their highest finish ever, and last season they were in 12th with 182 points at this point. UW-Whitewater was the only Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) school to finish higher than Eau Claire. Whitewater finished in 10th place with 215 points (100 for football, 25 for men’s soccer and 90 for women’s volleyball). Other WIAC institutions to appear on the list were UW-La Crosse (23rd place, 138 points), UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point (tied for 25th, 136 points) and UW-Oshkosh (39th place, 114 points). Washington (Mo.) is currently in first place with 322 points, earning points in women’s cross country, women’s soccer, men’s soccer and women’s volleyball. The Sports Academy Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program sponsor. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports – nine women’s and nine men’s.
