STUDENT-ATHLETES TO FACE OFF AGAINST FACULTY/STAFF THIS WEEKEND

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – For the first time in the history of UW-Eau Claire athletics, a showdown has been set for this Saturday that will match UW-Eau Claire student-athletes and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff.

In an event conceived by the Blugolds’ head women’s hockey coach Mike Collins and associate professor of geography Dr. Paul Kaldjian, the women’s hockey team and other student-athletes will take the ice to battle some of the university’s finest faculty and staff. In addition to Dr. Kaldjian, other faculty and staff who will participate at the event are Chancellor Dr. Brian Levin-Stankevich, Director of Athletics Scott Kilgallon and professor of economics and former Blugold men’s hockey coach Dr. Fred Kolb.

The event will feature the hockey game beginning at 2 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Center, with a silent auction going on during the game. Spectators can put their bids in for hockey jerseys, tickets and other items, with winners announced following the game. All proceeds raised will support the capital campaign of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library. Tickets will be available at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library, Riverside Bike and Skate, UWEC Activities and Programs Office, as well as at the door. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for people 16 and under, and free to all UWEC students with a valid ID.

Chancellor Dr. Levin-Stankevich, Director of Athletics Kilgallon, Coach Collins and Dr. Kaldjian echo one another in what a worthy cause the event will be. Not only will the event help the library raise funds, but will also showcase UW-Eau Claire’s student-athletes.

"The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library Capital Campaign is a worthy cause that will help benefit the youth and adults alike in Eau Claire," said Kilgallon. "This event is also great as it helps build interaction between student-athletes and the Athletics department with our faculty, entire university and the community."

The faculty/staff team is shaping up well, according to Dr. Kaldjian, and will feature some players with solid hockey backgrounds. He is looking forward to the game because it shows another side of professors people would not normally think of.

"Who generally thinks that their music or chemistry or geography professor has a slap shot?" said Dr. Kaldjian.

The members of the faculty/staff team also show a great sense of humor, recognizing the challenge they will face.

"It's a different type of conditioning than I'm used to doing on a regular basis," said Dr. Levin-Stankevich. "Hopefully, it'll be a fun event and the (athletes) will respect our advanced age and limited abilities as they display their talents."

Kilgallon also had similar feelings.

"All involved from the older generation should be commended for taking one for the team by exposing themselves to potentially some extreme physical discomforts and most assuredly bruised egos."
