TWO BLUGOLDS GAIN WIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

MADISON, Wis. – UW-Eau Claire men’s hockey goalie Tyler Brigl (So.-Eagan, Minn.) and men’s track and field member Sam Johnson (Jr.-Deer Park, Wis./Amery) have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) players of the week, conference spokesman Matt Stanek has announced.

Brigl posted his fourth shutout of the season as the Blugolds defeated UW-Stevens Point 2-0 on Saturday. The win allowed the Blugolds to move up to a fifth place finish in the NCHA, their best finish since the 2001-02 season. In the victory, Brigl stopped 19 shots, bringing his save total to 532 on the season. He has saved 90.3 percent of shots faced this year. Brigl's four shutouts this year is the most in a single year in program history. He now has five shutouts in his career which ranks first all-time among Blugold goalies.

Competing at the Impact Sports/Nike UW-Platteville Open on Feb. 16, Johnson place second in the weight throw with a fling of 59-8 1/4. His throw provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Division III Championship and ranks as the best in the conference this season, while ranking fourth on the NCAA list.
