SIX BLUGOLDS EARN WIAC HONORS

Six UW-Eau Claire athletes have earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference athlete of the week honors this week, conference Sports Information Director Matt Stanek has announced.

Sophomore Liz Kooistra (Lakeville, MN) and junior Abby Ofstedahl (Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) earned the offensive and defensive awards in soccer. Freshman Torie Ives (Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) and senior Jesse Thompson (Stevens Point/SPASH) shared the honor in women's golf. Freshman Brenna McCormick (Greendale) and junior Kristie Carlson (Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View) were the doubles team of the week in tennis.

Kooistra returned to action after missing two weeks with an injury. She scored the game winner over perennial conference power UW-Stevens Point in a 3-0 triumph. The Blugolds had not beaten the Pointers since 1991, a string of 24 matches. The win helped the Blugolds remain unbeaten in the league standings as they push for a repeat conference title. Ofstedahl keyed a Blugold defense that notched its eighth shutout in 10 contests this year. The Blugold defense limited Point to just four shots in the game.

Ives and Thompson shared medalist honors as the Blugolds won the eight-team UW-Stevens Point Invitational last weekend at the Stevens Point Country Club. After shooting an 83 on the opening day of the tourney, Ives stormed back with a meet-equaling low of 75 to finish with a 36-hole score of 158. Thompson had consistent rounds of 80 and 78 to tie Ives. The Blugolds won the meet, which included every WIAC school with women's golf, by four strokes over the host Pointers.

McCormick and Carlson won both of their No. 2 doubles matches, losing only three games in the two pro sets. The duo helped the Blugolds remain unbeaten for the season in eight dual meets with a 9-0 win over UW-Stevens Point and 6-3 decision over the College of St. Scholastica.
