FIVE NAMED WIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MADISON - Five UW-Eau Claire student-athletes were named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week for September 5-11, it was announced today by conference sports information director Matt Stanek. Quarterback Jesse Krzyzanowski (Sr.-Thorp) broke a 41-year old school record with six touchdown passes in UW-Eau Claire's 46-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan on September 10. He threw five touchdown passes in the first half, three in the first quarter and two in the second as the Blugolds raced to a 32-0 halftime lead. Krzyzanowski would break the record with a one-yard touchdown pass to Scotty Osborn in the third quarter. Krzyzanowski completed 22-of-30 passes for 239 yards in the contest with touchdown tosses of 8-, 5-, 13-, 6-, 38- and 1-yards. The previous school record of five touchdown passes was set by Jim Van Gorden against UW-Whitewater in 1964. Midfielder Marcia Foltz (Sr.-Madison/Memorial) scored or assisted on every goal during the week as UW-Eau Claire posted shutout victories over St. Thomas (MN) on September 8 and Illinois Wesleyan on September 11. In a 3-0 win over the Tommies, Foltz assisted on all three Blugold goals, which were scored with 29 minutes of each other. She scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over the Titans on a penalty kick at 34:51 in the first half. The women's tennis doubles team of Kristie Carlson (So.-Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View) and Laura Geissler (Jr.-Coon Rapids, MN) went 4-0 this weekend, winning a dual match against Milwaukee School of Engineering and earning first place at No. 1 doubles in the UW-Whitewater Invitational. At the UW-Whitewater Invitational, the duo won their first and second round matches at No. 1 doubles en route to the championship match against UW-La Crosse's Louie Dubinski and Julie Tellefsen, coming back to win 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Setter Carly Freiborg (Jr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) was named to the Augsburg (MN) All-Tournament Team as the Blugolds were declared the tournament champions finishing 4-0 on the weekend losing only one game in four matches. Freiborg posted a season-best 57 assists versus St. Scholastica (MN) while also adding 10 digs. For the weekend Freiborg averaged 12.3 assists, 2.4 digs and 1.2 service aces per game this weekend with a hitting percentage of .450.
