WOMEN'S TRACK GEARED FOR BLUGOLD OPEN

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire women's track team has had a successful outdoor season so far and looks to extend it at the lone home meet, the Blugold Open, this Friday.

The team started out by taking first out of nine at the Augustana College Viking Olympics. They had 256 points while second-place Augustana had 227. They also took control at the Falcon Invitational, which was hosted by UW-River Falls.

Blugolds have found themselves in the top spot in both events. Some have won twice. Erin Kokta (Sr.-Brookfield/East) took the long jump and triple jump. Christina Locke (Jr.-Racine/Horlick) won the 800-meter run and the 1500-meter run. Kjersten Holt (So.-Long Prairie, MN/LP Grey Eagle) was a 200-meter dash champion twice.

For the track side, many more took first. Shalene Huth (Jr.-Appleton/West) won the 100-meter dash. In the 400-meter dash, Liz Kooistra (Fr.-Lakeville, MN) took the top spot. Jane-Marie Ovanin (Sr.-Amherst) was the champ in the 10,000-meter run. Liz Faller (Jr.-Marinette) was the fastest 55-meter hurdle runner. Molly Warner (So.-Mosinee) took the 5000-meter run.

Field events have seen many first place performances. Brooke Schmidt (Sr.-Rice Lake/Stanley-Boyd) became the discus throw winner, as did Paula Crossfield (Jr.-Madison/East). Stephanie Barnes (Jr.-Sauk City/Sauk Prairie) won the pole vault.

The Blugold Open begins noon on Friday at Simpson Field as Eau Claire prepares for more first places.
