WOMEN'S HOCKEY PICKS UP FIRST WIN

WINONA, Minn. - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team broke open a close game with three third period goals en route to a 5-2 non-conference triumph over St. Mary's University here Tuesday.

In gaining their first win in three starts this season, the Blugolds outshot the Saints, 13-1, in the final period. St. Mary’s had outshot the Blugolds, 13-12, in the first period but the Blugolds started to take control with a 17-6 advantage in the second period. Overall, the Blugolds held a 42-20 advantage in shots.

The Blugold win was their first at St. Mary’s in the last four meetings at Winona and brought them within one of tying the all-time series which now stands at 5-6.

Eau Claire put the first score on the board at the 15:46 mark of the opening period on a Beth Dittrich (Fr.-Roseville, MN) goal. St. Mary’s countered less than a minute later and then jumped to a 2-1 lead 11 seconds into the second period. Lauren Havard (So.-San Angelo, TX/Arapahoe) tied the game at the 2:37 mark on a power play.

The teams skated to a standstill for the next 19 minutes of playing time. Then at 1:02 of the final period, Laura Suppes (Sr.-Roseville, MN) tallied the game winner on an assist from Michelle Stohr (Fr.-South St. Paul). Dittrich and Havard each added their second goal of the night to provide the Blugolds with their final margin of victory. For Dittrich, the two goals were the first of her collegiate career.

Bri Lutz (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) was in goal for the 'Golds who will square off against St. Benedict at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hobbs Ice Center.
