POINTERS PULL AHEAD OF WOMEN'S HOCKEY
EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey team dropped from third to fourth in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) tonight due to a 5-2 loss to ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point. Eau Claire has 10 points in the NCHA with a 4-6-2 conference record. Stevens Point improves to 5-4-1 with 11 points. Lake Forest (IL) could have 12 points if they won over NCHA-leading UW-River Falls tonight. Otherwise they would stay at 10 points with Eau Claire holding the tiebreaker. Only the top four teams make the postseason. The season record is 1-1 versus the Pointers with the previous win coming off of a short-handed Karen Hebert (Sr.-Lakeville, MN/Holy Angels) goal that occurred with a minute left in regulation. The all-time series record is 2-22-1 in favor of Stevens Point. After a first period that saw two Eau Claire shots on goal as well as an even-sided Pointer score, the Blugolds came into the second period down 1-0. The deficit grew to 2-0 at 7:03 after another even-handed Stevens Point goal. At 18:17 Eau Claire got back to within one due to a Tara Hayner (Sr.-Stillwater, MN) power-play strike. Lauren Havard (So.-San Angelo, TX/Arapahoe) assisted on the goal. The final period started out well with the Blugolds tying the game 18 seconds in. Laura Suppes (Sr.-Roseville, MN) scored the even-manned score while Hebert provided the pass. Less than two minutes later the Pointers pulled ahead again for good. Stevens Point then widened the margin at 7:05 and 12:46 with two more even-handed goals. Stevens Point outshot the Blugolds 28-to-15 with 11 of the Blugold shots coming in the middle period. Mikaela Jobman (Fr.-St. Paul, MN/Cretin Derham Hall) took the loss while giving up three goals and making 13 saves. Bri Lutz (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) made 10 saves and allowed two goals. Stevens Point went 0-for-2 on advantages while Eau Claire went 1-for-3. This was the cleanest game of the year with Stevens Point’s three penalties being a season-low for opponents and Eau Claire’s two also being a season-low.
